"Oh man. I actually side with Colby on this one. We designed these for an extremely niche purpose theater wide ballistic missiles defense against very capable adversaries. One battery can cover a huge area like in the Pacific. The interceptor count is reasonable compared to how many of these enemy missiles are out there. Each of the THAAD/SM-3 missiles costs more than a Falcon X launch to produce because they engage the target outside the atmosphere very far away and actually hit the target with a decent accuracy. What are we shooting down in CENTCOM Bucket of bolts rockets that have accuracy"

"@Noahpinion Patriot missile batteries and the Israeli systems are capable of engaging the type of missiles the Iranians fired in their terminal phase at like a quarter of the cost. Would probably be a few more hits but most of the hits didn't do any damage anyway"

"We did do this. A123 got several hundred million to develop the first commercial LFP batteries. Johnson Controls LG EnerDel GM Tesla Nissan and Dow also got X figures. The solar industrial policy was for everything but silicon PV because no one thought polysilicon prices could ever get low enough to make sense. First Solar was a temporary success from that program"

"Because there was no extra capacity. It was also really really cold in Oklahoma and other surrounding states. Gas was so short for homes and power plants that the price went stratospheric and would have bankrupted utilities like Oklahoma Natural Gas without the rate changes (its a XX year loan we pay off every month). Southwest Power Pool (Oklahoma Texas Panhandle Eastern NM) and MISO (Louisiana) also had to shed load at various points though it was less dramatic then ERCOT"
