"1) There are in fact companies building data centers on & under the ocean: Shenzhen HiCloud Data Center Technology Co. NetworkOcean (note: halted by regulators due to thermal pollution) Nautilus Data Technologies Subsea Cloud Mitsui OSK Lines & Kinetics Also government-led efforts: Singapores Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Building and Construction Authority (BCA) National Initiative South Korea 2) You cant have more than X GW datacenters in the ocean without severe local environmental damage (1 deg temp rise algae blooms coral damage fish migrations) so there will be"

"Zubrin says Starship is too heavy to go up and down on the Moon so it doesnt make sense hence we need a Starboat. And the X km delta-v to go down and up on the Moon is the same delta-v for Mars (with aerobraking). So a Starboat on the Moon would also be good for Mars"

"2/2 How effective would that be at reducing atmospheric effects (reducing deposition of heat where NOx is formed) and how much inefficiency would it inject into propellant usage"

"As launch rate increases massively damage to the atmosphere via depositing heat in the stratosphere it is going to become political issue. I wonder if it is feasible to have a coast phase during ascent while crossing the most sensitive part of the stratosphere. 1/2"

"The replies point out how many more airliner flights there are than rocket launches but this was already accounted for when I made the post and it is discussed in the many papers that have been published. Airliners travel low enough (8-12 km) that atmospheric mixing is efficient to dissipate the heat. Rockets inject heat in the range 15-50 km altitude where the mixing is extremely slow so the chemical effects are far greater than from the airlines despite the vastly lower flight rate. The effects include depleting ozone and creating NOx. One rocket launch has the environmental effect of 1000"

"I just heard a fantastic historical snippet. Buzz Aldrin's dad was best friends with Charles Lindbergh. The two of them went to the Gugenheim museum to raise funds for Robert Goddard to move to New Mexico for his rocket research. Aldrin Lindbergh Goddard. Wow"

"I really dont think it will be that hard to make AI think creatively (form new hypotheses invent novel technology etc.). I see people in denial over this so they arent going to be prepared when it happens. I hope I can convince a few people to prepare at least mentally. 1/"

"For off-Earth economic modeling I need an estimate of how many Starship flights per synodic period after the first humans go. Will it ramp up slowly or fast Thoughts Care to share a possible timeline And what is the max possible rate"

"I got a chuckle from Grok. I'm updating the Mars economic model to predict how much R&D investment is needed to reach waypoints for Mars settlement. Grok recommends I include this parameter: marsElonTimeFactor = 3; (Delay multiplier)"

"Interesting business model. They use their hypersonic launcher to drill tunnels in hard rock on Earth which creates revenue to develop it for spaceflight"

"Im bringing this up because theres an exponentially growing number of papers being published on how rocket launches damage the atmosphere. With public sentiment split on the owners of rocket companies I can see this fueling negative sentiment and becoming a political issue that threatens rocket launch rates"

"I always see arguments against space datacenters that view only part of the equation (a semi analysis). Do the whole thing (incl rising enviro costs falling launch cost & improving technology). That predicts the years till space becomes cheaper. Its not terribly far away"

"I think thats a valid tactic but I dont think it should be the only one and I dont think it has a super strong chance of working since the west is rather broken right now.😔 I do think the geopolitics will convince security-minded people but they might see space as a viable tactic due to the political realism so I think security considerations may end up paying development costs for data centers in space rather than helping make them unnecessary. Time will tell"
