"A brilliant design This is a Quick Don (Don meaning to put on) mask for pilots. Older masks werent slow necessarily but had just a metal & rubber setup that went over the top of your head while the sides were loose. The masks are always overpressured meaning the inside of the mask has a higher pressure than the ambient environment. The reason for this is that properly sealing a mask to prevent contaminants such as smoke or aerosols from entering is extremely difficult. Military gas masks must be fitted & fit-testedeven then the smallest leak means that air maybe even most of the air you get"

"There are different pilot jobs at an airline; you send in a resum application for them when there are openings. Regular First Officers & Captains are Line Pilots (various terms for it). An FO goes to Captain just based on seniority theres no real application. Then you can apply to be an Instructor Pilot. At airlines the instructors mostly work in the simulators either supervising the recurring training for Line Pilots or training New Hires Upgrades & pilots converting to new airframes. New hires upgrades & conversions must pass a checkride in the sim before being allowed in the jet as their"

Its an option from the manufacturer & airlines choose whether or not to purchase it. My airline doesnt have them on the XXX sadly. It allows you to land in some additional weather conditions but its not a huge step up. Its kind of a really nice to have but rarely really needed thing. Just when we needed a little push on local opinion. I wrote w/ a specific purpose. Started w/ a goal then worked backward to fill in the story. "Its not common to get a crack in the windscreen but its a thing that happens. The windscreens consist of multiple panes of glass laminated to a thick acrylic core. The outer pane is electrically heated keeping ice from forming as well as keeping it from becoming brittle in the cold at altitude. If its just the outer layer that cracks you can keep going (varies by operator & model). Youll turn off the electric heat to prevent arcing. If its the inside pane that cracks you land at the nearest available airfield. Replacing the windscreen takes a while as the adhesives & such will need time to"

"I just posted about uncontrolled fields not too long ago. US airlines can and do fly into fields where the tower is closed or doesnt exist like whats apparently happening here for about X hours. Approach control works like normal but instead of handing you off to Tower at about X miles out on final approach you cancel Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) ATC gives you a last update of anyone they see on radar in that area & switches you to a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF its often the Tower frequency). Then we just talk to each other & deconflictit would sound something like this: Burbank"

"An honest fair question. Truthfully in the vast majority of situations it probably wouldnt have an effect on the airplane to have your phone on but it could in some scenarios. The WiFi is on a different part of the spectrum than cell signals and doesnt interfere w/ avionics (though the rollout of Starlink on regional jets was paused briefly when it was discovered there was a bleed over to a wire bundle that wasnt shielded causing problems. They turned off systems already installed until they could figure out a fix which they did). The cell signals are much closer to some of the frequencies"

"Something I dont think I realized about major airlines before I got there was they fly to Uncontrolled Fields. Either there is no tower or the tower is closed. You turn on the airport lights by clicking the microphone a certain amount of times depending on how bright you want them. You broadcast where you are & what youre doing on a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF). If someone else is flying you deconflict yourselves. Its all very basic stuff we did in Cessnas. Id like to hear if Europe allows their airlines to do thisI have no idea but they seem stricter"

"Obviously weather plays a role in aviationbut what exactly are we cautious of Its not rain snow or gusty winds. To boil it down as simply as I can the big threats are ice & windshear. Many of you are probably thinking what about thunderstorms. Its true we wont takeoff land or fly into a thunderstorm but for the most part thats because of the windshear & icing potential. Rain & snow affect takeoff & landing performance but we can adjust our calculations to account for all but the most extreme events. Heavy enough rain can flame out engines but were talking about the kind of storms that are"

"Foreign Military Sales (FMS) is a program that sells military equipment training & can even sell support services such as tanker refueling to other countries. Its often a package deal but can be piecemeal. The origin of the program dates to 1976 under the Arms Export Control Act though the program has predecessors that stretch long before then. The State Department administers the program while the Department of War is responsible for implementation. Congress must be notified prior to an FMS agreement. "Ralph Kid Hofer was known for his long hair football jersey & lack of discipline. He served in the Mighty Eighth Air Force and gained some notoriety for downing an enemy on his first combat sortie. He became the second highest-scoring fighter pilot to be killed in action during WWII. He was dead by the age of XX. Hofer was something of a drifter and had happened upon a Canadian Air Force recruiter on one of his adventures. He seized the opportunity not because hed always wanted to but because it was just the next thing in front of him. He eventually ended up in the UK but saw no real action."
