"This is unfortunately too common: shutting down the wrong engine in an emergency. In a rush a mistake is made and it proves fatal. It killed a friend of mine in Afghanistan. Doesnt mean they were bad pilots. They were human. The best thing you can do in an emergency is to take a deep breath and do nothing at first calm yourself then take a look at whats going on (we called this hacking the clock). You analyze the situation. Is it really what you think it is After determining what needs to be done you move slowly & deliberately. You confirm each action with the other pilot: Confirm engine"

"Flew out of Baltimore yesterday & noticed a sad DC-10 out on its own. Wondered about itso looked it up. Its the remains of World Airways 8535. It basically crashed at BWI in 2009 but then actually went around back into the sky. Pilot error x2. They hit so hard their instruments failed & they couldnt climb into the clouds. The jet was a total write-off that took flight for a few more minutes. On inspection after the second landing it was clear it could never fly again. They apparently turned it into a training tool for local police & firefighters. Tough jet Video below: (Not my photo)"

"Tough call to blow the slides. Cant really criticize anyone for doing so. We brief what well do in an evacuation on every flight. Here is my Captains brief: Ill go to the back of the jet then sweep forward to make sure nobody is left behind. When I get there we go down the slides & start counting heads herding the cats & watching for fire trucks. Counting heads means I want to verify all passengers & crew have made it off the jet. Herding cats means passengers will be scared & scattered doing random things and we need them to stay together. Watching for fire trucks refers to the unfortunate"
