"I'm so old I wrote that That's assuming it's the Windows version which is the one I worked on. The Win9x game art and original code were done by Maxis/Cinematronics. I ported it to Windows NT converted the x86 asm to C made it work on RISC and so on. Success has many fathers and all credit should really go to the original designers. I'm just the fun uncle that brought it to the masses"

"@SnazzyLabs I sense a UDM Pro in the midst. Why is your bandwidth limited to 2.5G Is that the hardware NIC limit or do you have IDS/IPS turned one Reason I ask is the UDM Pro can only do IDS/IPS at about 2.5G so it seemed suspicious"

"Years ago I wrote the original Windows Task Manager and for the last week or so I've been tinkering on a new CPU monitoring visualization tool. I want to create virtual display panels in this style that show the CPU stats. I started on the PDP-11 then the VAX and now I've added x64 and MacOS/ARM as well. So the plumbing is in place but I lack any art skills And so I'm looking for an artist who loves the classic audio VFD display aesthetic and who can produce HTML/CSS content replicating it If you're interested please drop me a message RT if you're in artistic circle :-)"

"In my impl which may have been replaced I kept track of the time delta required to do various "atomic" ops like create a file move a file on the same volume copy 10K of data etc. Then I kept a running tally of the average time it had taken so far for each of those. And it would multiply those times by forward work to be done. It was wildly inaccurate in some cases dead on in others"

"Some more Windows Pinball Trivia follow for more random dev recollections The version that shipped in Windows before XP had a pretty serious bug - the game had no frame rate cap and I had never added one. After all if youre playing pinball you want it smooth :-) As PCs became faster it was eventually drawing 1000 frames a second and using the entire CPU core to do it. So Raymond Chen added a much-needed rate limiter on it. Some have noted that the physics are different. As far as I know Mike Sandige did the original physics engine and its something I kept entirely and just wrapped into a"

"I wanted to learn turbocharging and engine management but I didn't really want to build a car around it on my first attempt. So I built this intead. I took a GM ZZ502 short block Trick Flow 340cc heads and went shopping on eBay for cheap Chinese turbo parts. I found the two turbos an air-water intercooler blowoff valves wastegates and everything else I needed for under $1500. This was pre-tariffs. We strapped it to my buddy's engine dyno and it made 1200hp and 1500ft-lb before running out of fuel pressure. With EFI and turbocharging you have to bias the fuel pressure by the amount of boost."

"Success And I wrote my first BSD UNIX kernel api today: sys_wait_for_panel_update() I wanted to add a virtual panel to a real PDP that did not have a real one. To that end I added code to the power line clock interrupt to save the CPU state XX times a second. It then signals a sync object. The api I added allows you to wait for the next available panel update without busy-waiting or polling. When the api returns you have fresh data and a client app on the user side sends that data to the panel server at 60fps. The panel server proxies the data over to the web server running the panel"

"Humans love stimulants. And some people (those with ADHD/asd) love them more than others. Over the years we've had snuff chewing tobacco coffee coca leaves cocaine cigarettes benzedrine amphetamines methamphetamines caffeine pills diet pills (e.g. Dexedrine) Ritalin (methylphenidate) crack cocaine ephedrine energy drinks Adderall modafinil and more. Inhaling the burning tar-infused cellulose from a plant is a pretty lethal way to do it. Vaping is a very effective way to deliver a drug straight to the bloodstream but I don't know what the substantiated long-term risks are. Best to stick with"
