"Offices at Microsoft in the 90s: For me it was the ideal environment. I had an interior (no window) office about 8x12 and a desk and a bookshelf and a halogen pole lamp for indirect lighting. I'd turn off the fluorescent lights. A MIPS box for dev and a couple of 386/486 class machines for testing and remoting. A NEC 4Fg if you were lucky enough to get one or a Sony Trinitron. When I didn't want to be disturbed I could put a "SEND EMAIL" sticker on my door and close it. But XX% of the time my door was open for anyone to wander in. And people did it was a very collaborative environment. I used"

"I experienced FSD XX for the first time today in our @Tesla Plaid. and was suitably amazed. Not at the driving really as v13 was good enough. But it drove my from inside my garage through a porte cocher and gate drove me to my destination and found a parking spot which it then parked in. On the way home it came to a T intersection in the parking lot that was backed up. Rather than wait it out it chose to BACK UP and drive parallel to the blockage and around it. Just like I would have. The only "tweak" I'd like to see is that it took a couple of passes to back out of my garage but it can be"

"Some random speculation on the new "Task Manager Won't Exit" bug. but keep in mind I haven't seen the code in XX years. Below is the Task Manager code from circa XP (shared with permission): WM_CLOSE is handled conventionally it just calls DestroyWindows as you'd expect. However the Task Manager tray icon runs in its own thread so that it can never hang or block the UI but on shutdown the main thread waits for it to exit. I'd wager something is jammed with tray icons and Task Manager is dutifully waiting. That said it does seem I specified a wait timeout so if it were that it SHOULD exit"

"Quickly fixing other people's messes. That means when someone else's vital component has an issue and you've never seen it before you can parachute into the codebase figure it out brainstorm a fix on the whiteboard code it and get it working using whatever their dev stack is and commit the fix by 4PM. The corollary to this are people who "are waiting on an email back""

"When she says "no proof they were traffickers" it depends on what she means. Does she mean they don't HAVE the proof Or that they have not provided the proof to the public If they don't have the proof - ie: they're blowing up fisherman and hoping for the best then that's a crime. And I guess it'd be a war crime now. But do they have a duty to provide that proof to the public Seems less clear. It certainly wasn't true during the Cold War"

"I'm so old I wrote that That's assuming it's the Windows version which is the one I worked on. The Win9x game art and original code were done by Maxis/Cinematronics. I ported it to Windows NT converted the x86 asm to C made it work on RISC and so on. Success has many fathers and all credit should really go to the original designers. I'm just the fun uncle that brought it to the masses"

"The story of FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8. If you're not the type to pay for your software you probably know this key. What you might not know is that I worked on the first version of Windows Product Activation and this was our first major "hack". And yet it wasn't a 'hack' at all - it was a disastrous leak. The FCKGW key was a valid volume licensing key so all you needed was special volume media to go with it. Eventually they were bundled and put online by pirates. WPA worked by generating a hardware ID from your CPU RAM and other components then sending it to Microsoft alongside your"

"I've always enjoyed watching machines at work and it's the reason I wrote Task Manager which was really born out of watching the output of ps -ax on UNIX. I've watched a full disk defrag more than once and a full wash cycle on our new machines to see how they work. But that's an autism thing As a result I've always built task-manager-style displays for any interesting systems I'm coding on. Sometimes I bust out ncurses and get fancy sometimes it's just tabular but I feel like I need the "connection" to the running system to really grok what's going on inside. XXX years ago I'd likely be fully"

"Behold 600MB of raw storage - the DEC RA82 I got it mounted on rails in the rack thanks to an Amazon hydraulic lift table. Now I've got to store the table but it was super-handy There are two cross-braces in this rack that I had to work around hence the gaps. I'm going to get black acrylic pieces cut to fill the gaps as my odds of finding DEC filler panels of that size are pretty low :-)"

In addition to the normal load I found my wife cooking dinner in the oven while drying clothes in two dryers. and charging her Tesla at XX amps It actually has an interrupter to cut the Tesla charger if the generator load ever becomes too much but it must have been right on the ragged edge I set the car down to 30A and all seems well"
