"An Idiot's Guide to Buying a CNC Machine (thread) If you don't know where to start here ya go. I'm going to miss a lot but this thread should be a good primer. Before we get into what the "best" machine is we need to cover some basics about how you even buy one pic: dorky XX year old me on delivery day of my first ever machine XX years ago"

"1) Find your salesperson. (Nearly) every machine tool brand sells through dealers. One dealer per brand per territory usually a few brands per dealer. You'll have one rep this will be your primary point of contact through the whole process. Start just googling "haas your city" doosan your city okuma your city" etc and reach out to all the ones you want on your radar. Give them your cell # and a salesperson will reach out probably from their own cell"

"3ax "Normal Mills" - Can do anything within their travel - Haas VF Series - The "normal" go-to. Easy to use proprietary control - DN Solutions (Doosan) DVF - Feels a bit more like a "real" machine. Fanuc control has a bigger learning curve but many prefer these"

"3ax "High Speed Mills" aka "Drill tap centers" - smaller and faster than the above originally built for big factories but now becoming popular in small shops - Brother Speedio - Fan favorite. Super fast reliable. Proprietary control much loved. Comes in some really cool variants - Fanuc Robodrill - OG factory high speed machine fanuc control (obviously). Some cool out-of-the-box automation options"

"These places are set up to sell to companies but don't get intimidated if you're just a dude. Just tell them that - they'll sell to you. My salesman for my first machine met me in the garage of my condo before I even had a shop to put the machine in"

"5ax "General use" mills - Good for everyday X axis work - Haas UMC - Don't expect to do actual X axis work these are great for 3+2 (ie not moving all X at the same time for surfacing). Most work is done in 3+2 anyways - Doosan DVF - See above comparison same applies in 5ax - DMG Mori DMU series - A great actual X axis machine - Matsuura MX series- Now we're getting into real X axis machines"
