"And screw it - I'll give a shameless plug here. Check out our software Toolpath. You can drop in a STEP file our AI will program it and then you can send that into Fusion CAM. There's a bit of onboarding so feel free to shoot me a DM if you want some help. We have a great team who will help you out no matter your skill level"

"Next you or your electrician will need to wire the machine in. That part's easy just don't die. Then the dealer will have techs come out either on delivery day or a few days later. They'll level the machine take off brackets and whatnot run whatever checks and calibration are needed and give you some very very basic training (ie here's the on button). If you want training (which I recommend) usually you can work that into your deal with the dealer but remember to do this before hand and get a big discount (or get it for free)"

"An Idiot's Guide to Buying a CNC Machine (thread) If you don't know where to start here ya go. I'm going to miss a lot but this thread should be a good primer. Before we get into what the "best" machine is we need to cover some basics about how you even buy one pic: dorky XX year old me on delivery day of my first ever machine XX years ago"

"1) Find your salesperson. (Nearly) every machine tool brand sells through dealers. One dealer per brand per territory usually a few brands per dealer. You'll have one rep this will be your primary point of contact through the whole process. Start just googling "haas your city" doosan your city okuma your city" etc and reach out to all the ones you want on your radar. Give them your cell # and a salesperson will reach out probably from their own cell"

""WHAT MACHINE" I've purposely waited this long to get into actual machine selection because of how important all these prerequisites are. Here's a cheat sheet of popular machines:"

"3ax "Normal Mills" - Can do anything within their travel - Haas VF Series - The "normal" go-to. Easy to use proprietary control - DN Solutions (Doosan) DVF - Feels a bit more like a "real" machine. Fanuc control has a bigger learning curve but many prefer these"

"NEXT STEPS Now that you have your machine and a basic setup here are some priorities for you: 1) Get comfortable with your CAM workflow. Build up a standardized tool library so you aren't messing with tools every time you machine something. Model your workholding so you don't have to think about it and simulation will tell you (mostly) if you're going to crash 2) Learn about tooling and workholding. I mentioned earlier that this is an entire world. The baseline haas tooling stuff will get you started but there are SO MUCH better tools out there. Start researching online follow a bunch of"

"3ax "High Speed Mills" aka "Drill tap centers" - smaller and faster than the above originally built for big factories but now becoming popular in small shops - Brother Speedio - Fan favorite. Super fast reliable. Proprietary control much loved. Comes in some really cool variants - Fanuc Robodrill - OG factory high speed machine fanuc control (obviously). Some cool out-of-the-box automation options"

""Loyalist" machines - Brands like Mazak and Okuma for whatever reason tend to have shops that are all-mazak or all-okuma. They have super loyal followings and a great reputation. Good selection across verticals horizontals 5ax lathes etc"

"These places are set up to sell to companies but don't get intimidated if you're just a dude. Just tell them that - they'll sell to you. My salesman for my first machine met me in the garage of my condo before I even had a shop to put the machine in"

"5ax "General use" mills - Good for everyday X axis work - Haas UMC - Don't expect to do actual X axis work these are great for 3+2 (ie not moving all X at the same time for surfacing). Most work is done in 3+2 anyways - Doosan DVF - See above comparison same applies in 5ax - DMG Mori DMU series - A great actual X axis machine - Matsuura MX series- Now we're getting into real X axis machines"
