"In the case of BTC I think it is an issue. Consider P2PK addresses with Satoshi's and many other dormant coins. You can't just "upgrade it" you'd have to sunset P2PK which means those coins need to be moved by their owners or else they are forfeit. This will eventually have to happen and it could be a very contentious hard fork especially if it doesn't happen until after Q-Day and Satoshi's coins are yoinked"
