NEVADA MASS SHOOTING: Grand Sierra Resort shooting: What we know a day after gunman kills X in Reno

A day after a gunman armed with multiple rounds of ammunition shot six people, killing three, at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, the shooter's identity and any possible motive are still not known.

"I want to be clear, the suspect is to blame for this incident," Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance told reporters in a press briefing on Monday afternoon, hours after the shooting unfolded just before 7:30 a.m..

Police provided no details on the suspect or victims on Monday. The GSR released a statement that no employees were injured.

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve again praised the response of law enforcement in a conversation with the Reno Gazette Journal late Monday night.

"It could have been so much worse," she said. "I imagine who those people are who are just thinking about their day and standing in valet to maybe meet family for breakfast and then something like this happens.

"No one thinks something like this will happen. Life is fragile."

Reno City Councilman Devon Reese said he expected more information to be released Tuesday, including possibly the identity of the shooter.

"Police are so focused on this investigation and that is what they are thinking about," Reese said.

The names of the three people killed would come from the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office, Reese said.

"At this time, we have no reason to believe there is a connection between the suspect and victims," police said in a statement Monday.

Grand Sierra Resort shooting sequence of events
According to police, shortly before 7:25 a.m. Monday, July 28, an unidentified white man walked up to the valet area outside the hotel-casino in east Reno and fired multiple times, shooting five people.

One person died at the scene and another was later pronounced dead at Renown Regional Medical Center.

The suspect then went north through the parking lot, where a GSR security officer confronted him and they exchanged gunfire.

Continuing north, the suspect fatally shot a person who was driving through the parking lot.

Reno police arrived roughly after 7:25 a.m. and located the suspect on the northwest side of the parking lot. The suspect fired at an officer’s vehicle, and multiple officers returned fire.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Renown Regional Medical Center, where he was in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Two of the victims from the valet area were also in critical condition, police said. One other was treated and released.

Nance said police's rapid response prevented the shooter from taking more lives. One officer sustained minor injuries, most likely due to glass fragments.

Police said the shooter had several magazines of ammunition for the gun.

Sparks police will lead the investigation with assistance from the Washoe County Sherriff's Office.

There are no updates on the status of the victims or the investigation as of Tuesday morning, according to Sparks police.

GSR response
Grand Sierra Resort condemned the shooting and reported that all of their employees were safe when reached by the Reno Gazette Journal on Monday.

"We can confirm that no Grand Sierra Resort team members were injured," a representative for the GSR said.

Sparks police said the hotel-casino is open and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The GSR said it is actively working to support anyone who may have been impacted by the shooting.

“We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that occurred in our parking area earlier today,” the Grand Sierra Resort said. “Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident.”
