FedEx, the leader in overnighting office documents, was losing revenue to fax machines in 1984. So they came up with the idea of faxing documents to FedEx offices near the customer location.

The service, called ZapMail, failed because offices simply got their own fax machines and didn't need the FedEx fax machine network.

As Dario is pointing out here, hyperscalers have behaved like FedEx in dealing with this new technology. The value isn't in splurging on acquiring GPUs and data center capacity. Most users don't need to "rent" GPUs by the hour from hyperscalers, when DeepSeek on Apple M1 is just as good.

Hyperscalers binging on GPUs is like FedEx binging on buying fax machines. Completely misses the mark.
