BEFORE YOU VOTE, ASK US FIRST

I’m currently watching the House of Representatives voting for the next Speaker of the House.

I have a curious question -- and this is not about discrediting any of the candidates -- but about how the representatives are voting.

How do our representatives arrive at their decisions when they vote... not just for Speaker, but on bills, budgets, and issues that shape people’s lives?

Who do they consult? When do they ask the people? How do they asf the people?

Was there any town hall meetings? Did they go to the countrysides and the baranggays in their districts to ask? Was there a constituency meeting? Or even a post on social media asking, "What do you think of this?"

Because if there was, I must have blinked and missed it.

These congressmen and congresswomen were elected to represent those who voted for them. They are not supposed to vote based on party loyalty, personal favors, or marching orders whispered behind closed doors.

Their vote is supposed to be our voice.

But, how can they claim to carry the will of the people they represent when they never asked what that our will is in the first place?

Being a representative is not a title. You are not there because you are special. You are there because of the social contract that you have with your constituents.

It is your duty to represent the people who gave you power. And if you didn't consult them before you voted, then you're not their representative.

You're just voting for yourself because you're hungry for fame and power.
