Symbols have to cross a threshold of universal acceptance and recognition before it can be effectively used, for that specific domain. Photoshop icon toolbar is a classic. There is a learning curve, a cross point of ambiguity (either text or symbols work) and then symbols are superior. Btw, glyphs in given language are just that: learned symbols at a fundamental level. No different than icons or road signs. However, they’re recognized in multiple abstractions: at glyph level and as group of glyphs (words).
