In a groundbreaking experiment in 2013, physicist Aneta Stodolna and her team at the FOM Institute in the Netherlands captured the first-ever image of an electron’s orbital inside a hydrogen atom.

This astonishing achievement reveals the actual “shape” of an electron’s wave function, visualizing how it exists not as a fixed point, but as a cloud of probability dictated by quantum physics. Until this moment, electron orbits were known only through mathematical abstractions like the Schrödinger equation. Seeing them directly was once considered impossible.
