I can guess why. And it has to do with Elon’s longstanding concerns about population collapse.

Lots of data suggests that nothing outside of draconian social restrictions or civilizational regression to agrarianism seems to have any chance of slowing it down. Both of which would be extremely unpopular and destabilizing to society.

The unsaid third option of printing massive amounts of money to give as incentives for starting families is a likely contingency most states will rely on, but naturally unsustainable due to inflation.

The fourth option is buying time by supplementing the losses. Humanoid robotics, mass automations, and advanced longevity therapeutics to fill the gaps left behind by aging workers, and help them stay productive for longer.

Elon and his companies are obviously betting hard on robotics, but longevity is another side of the equation. It obviously comes with its own challenges, both technical and cultural, but if gains can be made it may be worthwhile.

And given how vocal Elon has been about population collapse, I’d be surprised if it weren’t something he was considering supporting somehow.
