I teach young analysts the benefits of doing “360 degree research” on companies in which they are interested.  That means studying customer behavior, talking to suppliers and distributors, analyzing competitors, and listening to management.  All too often I see $TSLA investors focused way too much on dissecting management’s comments on earnings calls, meetings, and special events rather than doing their own research.  Some of my best research insights over the years have come from disregarding management’s comments, who tend to be overly optimistic and tend to speak of aspirations rather than actual goals.
