Thousands of tons of aggressive algae from Southeast Asia have invaded beaches in Spain near the Strait of Gibraltar, The Guardian reports.

Environmentalists warn that the species Rugulopteryx okamurae threatens the region’s biodiversity:
“These algae are brought in ballast tanks of ships passing through the Suez Canal and discharging water into the Mediterranean. Over the past decade, they have spread across the Strait of Gibraltar, much of Spain’s southern coast, and even the Canary and Azores Islands.”

The algae not only entangle fishing nets and disrupt windsurfing but also deplete oxygen in the water. They pose a serious threat to native marine vegetation, whose survival is now uncertain. The species has no natural predators and is resistant to toxins, making it nearly impossible to eliminate.
