EU Freezes €1.5 Billion in Aid to Ukraine Over Controversial Law Undermining Anti-Corruption Agencies.

The European Union has suspended €1.5 billion in aid to Ukraine from the Ukraine Facility fund after the Verkhovna Rada passed a law stripping two anti-corruption agencies of their independence, The New York Times reports.

The total fund amounts to €4.5 billion, but the money is disbursed in stages and tied to good governance conditions.

Following criticism from the EU and U.S., President Zelensky introduced a new bill to restore the agencies’ independence. But it was too late — the decision to block the funds had already been made. The question now is: for how long?
