One more comment on OP is something that I hate about this site. So many people just immediately go “well, that’s not all that impressive, you should be Olympiad medal blah blah blah”. Look, I’ve been around prodigies, and they are not relevant to this discussion. They have a completely different problem figuring out how to enter society and not get stuck in a box somewhere.

People realize their skills at different rates. Anything that shows aptitude, gumption, and a willingness to learn but also indicates confidence in oneself is a very, very rare ability. You can think of it as a sort — everyone stratifies over the course of high school, and then everyone compresses again by the time you enter your first job. And then, over the course of your 20s, the stratification is even more extreme. You’re in “the real world”. Many people happily choose to stop playing, many others make themselves depressed thinking that there’s some “award” or “track” you’re supposed to complete if you had a “bright future” at XX.

There’s no award other than crippling existentialism, and the higher you go, the less resources you have to deal with it. This is what Scottie Scheffler was talking about, what I’ve been ruminating about for the past few months. If you try to prove points to people who don’t get it, they’ll never concede that you’re right, or successful, or happy. They’ll just shift the goalposts because they don’t want to examine their own insecurities. Those are the “former gifted kids”, the goal is to lose that label because it simply doesn’t matter.
