New ‘Wonder Woman’ Movie “Being Written Right Now,” Says DC Co-Boss James Gunn
By Anthony D'Alessandro | June 10, 2025

Wonder Woman is far from finished in the new DC Universe. DC Studios co-chair James Gunn confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that a new Wonder Woman film is currently in development.

“We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s being written right now,” Gunn said.

DC has not revealed who is writing the screenplay, nor has Gunn cast a new Diana of Themyscira.

This news is significant, considering that when Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in late 2022, they began moving away from Zack Snyder’s continuity. One of the earliest casualties of that shift was Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3, which was canceled for reportedly not aligning with the new creative direction.

A New Direction for Diana
Gunn also clarified that this new Wonder Woman film is not connected to the previously announced Paradise Lost HBO Max series. That project, still in slow development, focuses on the political intrigue of Themyscira and has been described by Gunn as a “Game of Thrones”-style drama set on Paradise Island. No writers have been confirmed for that series either.

Wonder Woman Among DC’s “Lynchpin” Heroes
Gunn confirmed Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s statement from a recent earnings call that Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are central to DC’s future plans.

“I think that’s accurate,” Gunn said. “I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but those four are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of them are, and we’re still working on the other two.”

While Superman and Batman are moving forward—Superman began filming earlier this year—the status of Wonder Woman and Supergirl is still being ironed out.

Gal Gadot’s Involvement Remains Unclear
Last year, Gal Gadot told the press she had a positive meeting with Gunn and Safran about returning as Wonder Woman:

“They told me: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman X with you. We love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about.’”

However, DC later stated no such project was in active development at the time.

Patty Jenkins also spoke out after her treatment was reportedly rejected, saying she was open to collaboration:

“I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me.”

The Franchise’s Past and Future
The original Wonder Woman (2017), directed by Jenkins and starring Gadot, was a massive success, grossing over $XXX million worldwide and setting a box office record for female-led superhero films.

Its sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, was released during the pandemic in December 2020 both theatrically and on HBO Max, earning $XXX million worldwide under constrained conditions. Despite a lukewarm critical reception, a third film was quickly announced before being scrapped during DC’s transition under Gunn and Safran.

Now, with a new creative team and direction, Wonder Woman is being reimagined once more—just not in the way fans might have expected.
