I’m all for keeping obligations met, but there is certainly a poetic justice in default. The debt was also taken on to primarily benefit those in office, not the taxpaying-widgets who would be better off with sound fiscal policy.

Institutions have effectively been loaning to the town drunk (aka, the State) based on a perceived ability to taxtract ever more dollars (except …TaBoR).
Irresponsibly (malevolently(?)) loaning money to someone with an inability to understand the ramifications of debt, like a child, or the government, is a risk in and of itself, which is the basis for the interest—it’s the reward (not guarantee) for taking risk…if it works out.
Downside…the government which should not be incurring debt anyway will find fewer takers for the risk, resulting in better fiscal policy.
