LMJ’s issue are a legit problem, as team may have to explore with Lance the idea of pitching out of the pen for at least the remainder of this season. After a brief spike in velocity LMJ has seen his FB velo drop to 90-92 again, which makes his change less effective as there isn’t a big disparity in velocity. If that’s what his velo is moving forward he will need to be a curve/slider pitcher and while he has tremendous movement on those pitches when his command is off those pitches are drifting to very hittable spaces or far off the plate. Walks are an issue It could be time to see if Lance’s arm is capable of handling pen work, as it’s a different preparation and routine than a starter - how fast can he get ready? How fast can he bounce back? If he only has to go one inning, can he dial up more velo on the heat? Lot of questions to explore with Lance. Walter’s injury complicated things and it likely behooves team to get another starter capable arm (Uncle Charlie?) that would have a low cost of acquisition and an expiring contract. It’s amazing the Astros have played as well as they have and pitched as well as they have with essentially X aces and the rest of the rotation being a ragtag bunch of rookies, waiver claims, and a guy coming back after not pitching for over X years - and that’s the guy who’s actually pitched the worst. Returning starters eliminates need for adding another pen arm They can focus on getting a solid LH bat (Willi Castro?) and a lower priced starter capable arm to insure vs further injuries to the staff.
