Makes sense, their hitting has been horrendous, so might as well test the zone and see if you can get on base the easy way. This matchup ends up being great for a few reasons. One is that Gausman's walk rate has been in the double digits since June. Another is that Gausman Gausman's zone rate is a disastrous XX% when facing a 3-count, significantly lower than the XX% league average. Combine that with the fact that Detroit has just a XX% swing rate on 3-count pitches outside the zone this month vs RHPs and hold the 3rd highest walk-rate when a RHP throws outside the zone on a 3-count (Basically just saying they don't chase when they shouldn't and yes, that obviously forces walks). Another reason I love fading Gausman here is that this deterioration of control deeper into the season is not new. In each of the prior X seasons, his walk rate has jumped 2.5%+ when comparing pre and post all star break. Just to paint the picture even more clearly: When facing a 3-count, Gausman's has allowed a walk in XX% of PAs since June. The league average is 41%.
