US sanctions targeting the ruling Southern African liberation movements are prompting these parties to close ranks, adopting a siege mentality in response to what they perceive as external aggression. In this climate of defensive solidarity, many in the region are increasingly turning to ZANU-PF — the seasoned old wily fox, and strategically adept veteran of the region, for guidance, drawing on its well-honed survival instincts developed over decades of domestic political and diplomatic confrontation.

ZANU-PF’s legacy, rooted in the protracted and brutal liberation war waged by ZANLA and ZIPRA over XX years, commands deep respect among fellow liberation parties across the region. That armed struggle remains one of the longest and most intense anti-colonial conflicts in the World, and its memory continues to shape political loyalties and strategic thinking among Southern Africa's post-liberation elites.

As a result, US sanctions — far from empowering democratic forces- are inadvertently hardening authoritarian entrenchment and creating increasingly inhospitable conditions for opposition movements. The closing of ranks among ruling parties, underpinned by shared histories and ideological affinity, diminishes the political space available for reformist actors and exacerbates the polarisation of domestic politics.
