Historically, two Liberation Movements have been electorally ousted from power; these are UNIP of Zambia and BDP of Botswana. South Africa’s ANC had its governing powers severely attenuated, leading to the formation of a governing coalition in which, thankfully, the ANC remains the dominant party. If the Zimbabwean experience is anything to go by, skillful leadership and greater exertion can reverse this to enable such a Liberation Movement to regain ascendancy, even under adverse international circumstances, including retributive sanctions. South Africa’s ANC faces a real threat from US hostilities which might translate to sanctions.
