Many people say that Tesla is too late to the autonomy game because Waymo already exists. I have a different perspective.

Waymo started in 2009 while Tesla started working on self-driving software in 2016. If Google did not deploy first that would be a major failure.

But Waymo is only now just starting to scale up — they are available in five cities so far. That is very small compared to the global market for manual driving.

Meanwhile Tesla FSD is now working in the US, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, China, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, France, etc…

It seems like focusing on pure vision didn’t slow Tesla down to the point where it was too late to take a slice of the self-driving market. The self-driving market remains nascent with major metros like New York, Chicago, and Florida still without any driverless cars at all.

Tesla isn’t too late at all. Driverless vehicles are just now starting to ramp up and Tesla is ready with a system that can make a car drive *better* than the competition without any clunky expensive hardware retrofits.

Most people do not understand how strong their strategic position is. But Waymo does. I can tell they do. They’re not taking this lightly.
