If you enter a trade correctly, knowing when to get out if you’re wrong should be easy.

Stop losses should reflect where the trade breaks down from a structural or thesis driven perspective, not an arbitrary %.

That’s why it’s so important to make sure you enter the trade at a point that makes sense structurally.

It’s easy to just say “I’ll stop out X% from my entry” but if X% lower from your entry has no structural meaning on the chart, having a stop loss there doesn’t make much sense.

From an analytical standpoint, usually the appropriate stop loss is the point at which the underlying rationale for the trade no longer holds. That could be the breakdown of a support level (especially with high volume confirmation), a violation of key moving averages that have historically held such as the 10/20 day, or a failed retest of a breakout level.

This is why the entry is the foundation of every trade, it makes every decision going forward much easier.

Calculated entries typically = higher probability of success and lower probability of big losses.
