To be fair, the biggest change happened in FIFA XX.

They removed the free-roam/organized system, and it was the first year players started sticking to their positions instead of swapping when another player left his main role.

FIFA XX was the nail in the coffin — the AI was dismantled from that game.

Roles can be a good thing if we get back the free-roam AI because if you see your opponent does a mistake and you can exploit him with a specific role you can switch up to organized and roles might be good.

Also if they add at any role the verstile thing so they can let the player the pick depeding on a situation it would be a great thing.
