@GRIMMYRAX Start by looking at why they got into video games. PlayStation exists because of Nintendo wanting a disc-based add-on for the SNES; the Nintendo PlayStation. This fell through, and after investing in R&D, Sony modified and released it themselves.

PS exists to justify sunk costs.
