I have long argued that a more affordable $TSLA Model Y that’s a new form factor that expands TSLA TAM to a new category (hatchback or compact segments) would be a huge positive for TSLA stock. Unfortunately that does not appear to be where TSLA is headed, as I’ve been told time and time again by both suppliers and former TSLA employees. See Lars’ and Elon’s comments on this topic from the 2Q earnings call.

If TSLA instead adds a new Model Y trim that reduces Model Y costs (smaller battery, smaller screens, cloth seats, less expensive sound system, smaller wheels, etc) but doesn’t reduce the size, and cuts price to maintain the same gross margin, that won’t likely help TSLA stock, as the cheaper trim will most likely cannibalize more expensive Model Y trims. As an old boss of mine used to say when I was a J&J product manager, you can’t take a gross margin to the bank, just a dollar.
