While Wang brings startup execution chops, Zhao — a “foundational contributor” to OpenAI’s o1 — brings deep AI research experience, particularly in AI reasoning models, an area Meta is now aggressively targeting. Zhao’s appointment follows Meta’s successful recruitment drive, pulling in top talent from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, Apple, and Meta’s own FAIR lab. Notably, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao B., Hongyu Ren, Trapit Bansal, and several researchers from OpenAI’s Zurich office have joined MSL’s expanding roster. Backed by eight- and nine-figure offers and a 1-gigawatt AI training cluster named Prometheus (coming online in 2026), Meta’s ambitions are crystal clear.
