It is encouraging to see Zimbabwe reviving the David Whitehead Textile Company and creating much-needed employment opportunities. Those who have lived long enough, know what David Whitehead used to be in terms of our textile industry and clothing retail. 

However, the company’s long-term viability hinges on several critical factors — including the performance of the local cotton farming sector and prevailing market conditions. 

The widespread availability of second-hand clothing and imported garments sold in streets and flea markets presents a major challenge, making it difficult for the domestic textile industry to achieve a swift and sustainable recovery. (Video: @KMutisi)
