President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has emphasised that Genocide Remembrance Day, which commemorates the atrocities committed between 1904 and 1908, should serve as a powerful reminder of Namibia’s shared resolve to continue on the path of nation-building, reconciliation, and healing the wounds of the past.

Delivering a statement on behalf of the President at Onanyama-Omuhongo village in the Epembe Constituency, Ohangwena Region, Vice-President Lucia Witbooi highlighted the significance of XX May in honouring the resilience and bravery of Namibia’s ancestors, who fought to defend their land during one of the darkest periods in the country’s history.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah stated that the day should especially remind Namibians of the enduring spirit and sacrifices made by the Ovaherero and Nama communities during the genocide of 1904–1908. 

She noted that the Genocide Remembrance Day underscores the gravity and compassion with which Namibians must continue to approach this tragic chapter in their history.

The message was delivered at the belated commemoration of the Genocide Remembrance Day in the Ohangwena Region.
