Yasser Abu Shabab was arrested by Hamas in 2015 on charges of drug trafficking and theft, and sentenced to XX years in prison. He escaped during the chaos of the October 2023 war, when Israeli airstrikes hit the prison where he was being held. Since then, his so-called “Popular Forces” have looted aid trucks near Kerem Shalom under Israeli military protection.

The UN’s OCHA has condemned his group for being responsible for “the real theft of aid… under the watch of Israeli forces.” For months, his fighters have siphoned off food and supplies—deepening the starvation of Palestinians in Gaza. His own Tarabin clan leaders have publicly disowned him for being a collaborator and urged those around him to “execute him” as soon as possible.

Now WSJ has given him a platform to smear UNRWA in a new column. He writes: “Hamas still controls aid access and dominates institutions like the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or Unrwa.”

He also promotes Israel’s population concentration camp plan: “We have already received requests from many families to relocate to eastern Rafah. With proper support, we are ready to take responsibility for the rest of Rafah. Within months, more than XXXXXXX people—nearly a third of Gaza’s population—could be living outside the cycle of war.”
