When I was flying C-141s, I used to transit Sigonella NAS, Sicily, Italy, frequently. The military built an American hotel near the Sigonella Annex, ie, base housing, and it was perfect for aircrews. A restaurant firing up wood-fire pizzas, a swimming pool with a swim up bar, a nice workout room. I always enjoyed it. In any event, one night my crew had dinner at a local Italian restaurant, drank some wine, and went back to the hotel and swam for a bit. That night, I walked up to my room, and opened the windows and the drapes. Mount Aetna had erupted and the flames were shooting high. It was right in front of me. I just laid back on my bed and watched. It was spectacular. Quick flying story.
