Where Our Alphabet Was Born: The Kilamuwa Stele

This inscription is a stunning example of the early alphabet that eventually gave rise to the one we use today. It's the Kilamuwa Stele, written in Phoenician or a closely related script, dated to ca. XXX BCE. Kilamuwa was king of Sam’al (modern-day Zincirli Höyük, Türkiye).
Look closely at the letters—they're ancestors of our modern alphabet!
