A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment scam where returns are paid to earlier investors using the capital from newer investors, rather than from legitimate profits. It relies on a constant influx of new money to sustain itself and collapses when new investors dry up or withdrawals exceed contributions. Named after Charles Ponzi, who ran such a scheme in the 1920s, it promises high returns with little risk but is unsustainable and illegal.
