Pokrovsk was originally named Grishino, it was founded in 1875 by the Russian Ministry of Railways to establish a station that grew to make it a crucial strategic hub. The town grew around this station and by 1881, a locomotive depot was built, in 1883, the station was enlarged, spurring further development and investment. The city now looks set to return to Russian control after a long absence.
