XX. Popular church president David McKay reportedly told Mormon apologist Hugh Nibley that he believed Joseph Smith wrote the Book of Mormon. Ever the diplomat (he also probably would’ve ended the race ban, but didn’t want to ruffle feathers), McKay mostly kept this to himself.
