On July 25, 2025, RFE/RL published a video in which correspondent Kian Sharifi referred to Syunik, Armenia’s southernmost province, as “Zangezur,” an Armenian word now ironically co-opted by Baku to advance baseless territorial claims on Armenian land. For context, it's crucial to note that on May 12, 2021, Azerbaijani forces crossed into Armenia’s internationally recognized borders and have since occupied more than XX km² in the Syunik and Gegharkunik provinces, including areas near Lake Sevan and Vardenis. RFE/RL must immediately retract the video and issue a public apology—or risk being seen as complicit in Baku’s well-funded, tightly coordinated campaign to distort history, erase borders, and promote pan-Turkic expansionism at Armenia’s expense. It is worth noting that RFE/RL also operates an Armenian-language service known as Azatutyun.
