MLS has suspended Messi and Alba for this weekend’s Inter Miami home game vs. Cincinnati after they skipped the All-Star Game. Yes, MLS followed its rules to a T - but can we agree that punishing players in a way that affects real competition over a marketing event is idiotic? Can we also agree that better league scheduling might’ve avoided this? That maybe - in the midst of a jam-packed schedule - forcing players like Messi and Alba, who played the weekend before, to suit up for an All-Star game, when they play again two days after and then launch into a money-grab tournament midweek, isn’t the wisest move? And can we stop pretending this is as simple as “Messi and Alba missed the All-Star Game”? MLS owns part of the blame too. Poor planning. Poor judgment. And now, poor execution with a punishment that actively damages the product. Beyond idiotic. MLS has suspended Messi and Alba for this weekend’s Inter Miami home game vs. Cincinnati after they skipped the All-Star Game.
Yes, MLS followed its rules to a T - but can we agree that punishing players in a way that affects real competition over a marketing event is idiotic?
Can we also agree that better league scheduling might’ve avoided this?
