The prepper mentality is the perfect example of what I was talking about. Instead of fixing supply chains or building resilient communities, we’re telling people to buy generators and stockpile rice. It’s the same backwards incentive structure - individual escape hatches instead of collective solutions. Even if I prep perfectly, my kids still inherit a world where everyone else is struggling. The resources we spend on bunkers and stockpiles could go toward making supply chains more robust, communities more resilient, systems more reliable for everyone. But there’s no VC funding for “let’s make sure grocery stores never run out of essentials.” There’s plenty for selling emergency kits to anxious suburbanites though. We’ve convinced ourselves that the best way to protect our families is to abandon everyone else’s families. That’s not preparation - that’s just giving up on civilization.
