Most of the homeless I see appear not to be working except for often begging at stop lights. I often take bike rides through an area where 100s live in tents. Most I see near the trail appear to not be of sound mind or on drugs of some kind. Based on "studies" they say a high percentage are homeless because lack of affordable housing and poverty. Based on what I see, most are homeless because of not working. Many do appear to have issues with drugs, their mind and/or their work ethic. Grok got data from academic studies, HUD Reports and National Alliance to End Homelessness. Not sure if there was any bias in reporting this data. Interesting that not so good personal responsibility and work ethic are not even mentioned as a possible reason for homelessness. Many Americans are a bit lazy and like to do drugs. That can lead to not enough money to have good housing for yourself. From Grok While exact percentages are difficult to pin down due to overlapping causes and limited data, the lack of affordable housing (30-50%) and poverty (20-30%) are the leading drivers of homelessness in the U.S., followed by domestic violence (10-20%), mental health issues (10-20%), substance use disorders (5-15%), and other systemic or life events (10-20%). These estimates are derived from synthesizing sources like the National Alliance to End Homelessness, HUD reports, and academic studies.
