Banks pool your deposits, give them out as loans for extra profits, and charge up to X% fees on these loans. They’re centralized which means that they’re slow and transfers can take days, they’re insured which means your money is safe but you earn very little interest from locking up your money with them (0.5-1%). And for custody? They’re the ones in control of your money not you.
