this reminds me of when someone on tiktok pointed out how this sounds like sonar, like something echoing through the ocean for object detection.

that connection becomes even more layered when you think about the banjo’s origins, an instrument with deep african roots that enslaved africans carried, in spirit and form, across the atlantic. it evolved into a core symbol of americana, but only after being stripped from its black identity.

beyoncé singing caro mio ben, a european classical piece, right before shifting into daughter where she calls herself “colder than titanic water,” feels deliberate. she’s voicing america’s daughter, a nation born from both the cruelty of europe and the blood of black people. that line hits differently when you consider the banjo’s journey, the sounds of the middle passage, and how america’s black daughters are still asking why the country is so cold to them.
