As I read somewhere on this app today- PM Modi preferred to keep relationship with Maldives intact as opposed to Rajiv Gandhi who messed up our relationship with Nepal because they didn't let a non-Hindu lady enter Pashupatinath temple. 

For PM Modi, interest of India > ego.
