US envoy Steve Witkoff exposed last night what Jerusalem tried to hide about negotiations with Hamas: There’s nobody to talk to. Announcing that the American team is leaving Doha, Witkoff slammed Hamas, which he said “does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith.”

But this isn’t the line Israel was pushing. Fearing the response from the Israeli public, which is increasingly war-weary, Jerusalem tried to claim that its own delegation’s return didn’t signal a breakdown in talks.

Then came Witkoff, telling the simple truth that there’s no partner to negotiate with.

What makes Washington’s envoy think that? According to @ohadh1, Hamas has been insisting on the following: On day XX of the 60-day ceasefire, Israel will lay down its arms and not renew the war. But Hamas went even further, demanding that Israel agree to this even if the two sides have not reached an agreement on how to end the war—and that this be explicitly stated in the ceasefire agreement.

No wonder Israel and the US walked away from the talks.

It’s worth adding: The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Remember Monday’s joint statement from XX countries, declaring that the war in Gaza “must end now” and that civilians’ suffering has “reached new depths”? And then the separate, similarly-misguided statements yesterday and today from the British and Australian prime ministers?

Well, in what should have surprised absolutely nobody, the pressure those countries exerted on Israel to keep compromising only led Hamas to harden its stance even more.

And now, it appears, we’re back to square one.
