Katchatheevu, a 163-acre island, was owned by the Ramnad Kingdom of Ramanathapuram Rameshwaram. Became part of Tamil Nadu post-independence.

In 1974, the then PM of India, Indira Gandhi, gifted Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka without any ratification from the Parliament.
