On November 23, 1996, the flight, en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, was hijacked by three Ethiopians seeking asylum in Australia. The hijackers forced the pilots to fly towards Australia, but the plane ran out of fuel and crashed into the Indian Ocean near the Comoros Islands. The crash resulted in the deaths of XXX of the XXX people on board, including all three hijackers.
