I've been in the tech industry going on X decades, long before Al Gore invented the internet and the rise of Big Tech hegemony.

Tech has traditionally been a very hot/cold industry, with labor practices correlating. In slow times engineers would bag groceries, in peak times employers would poach grocery baggers if they could write basic HTML. Even out of high school.

Then the H-1B system was booted up in the 90's where employers soon realized they could import largely sub-par engineering resources from Third-world countries (mainly India) for a fraction of what they could pay Americans. Then instruct Americans to train their foreign replacements if they expected even a pittance of a severance after XX years of service. Just ask Disney or SDG&E.

Presidential administrations change, this practice continues unabated. If I had a child who expressed an interest in software engineering I would try and steer them towards a more promising future in the performing arts. Musical theater, or perhaps drumming for a Rock 'n Roll band.
